SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Macalester College volleyball team closed out the UW-Superior Tournament with a win over the host Yellowjackets in five sets on Saturday. The Scots, who lost to Nebraska-Wesleyan earlier in the day, are now 6-3 overall on the season.
Against Nebraska-Wesleyan (6-0), Macalester battled the unbeaten Prairie Wolves before falling, 26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 25-19. The Scots had two match points in the first set but were unable to close out the set. After dropping the second set, Macalester rebounded in the third set, with junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) tallying four kills and first years
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and
Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) adding three kills apiece in a 25-17 win. Nebraska-Wesleyan ended the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
King finished with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Geber and sophomore
Anna Fritz (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) each contributed seven kills. First year setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) recorded 37 assists and 10 digs, with Preston and sophomore
Abi Janzen (Ames, Iowa/Ames) adding 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
In the Scots' final match of the tournament, Macalester downed UW-Superior (2-6) in five sets, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-5. After splitting two close sets, the Scots took the advantage with a lopsided 25-14 win in the third set. The Yellowjackets answered in the fourth set, only to have Macalester dominate the fifth and final stanza, 15-5 to clinch the match.
King finished with a match-high 16 kills to go with 11 digs. Preston put away 11 kills and paced the Scots' defense with 17 digs, while Geber hit .348 with nine kills. Fritz had another strong performance with eight kills. Norton delivered 40 assists and 11 digs, with Janzen also registering 11 digs. Both King and Geber were included on the All-Tournament Team.
Macalester, which is off to its best start since the 2015 squad opened with a 10-1 record, hosts North Central University on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in a non-conference match. The first serve goes up at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
