ST. PAUL, Minn. – After losing the first set, the Macalester College volleyball team won the next three sets to defeat North Central University, 15-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The victory gives the Scots a 7-3 record heading into Friday's MIAC opener against Carleton, while the Rams fall to 2-7.
In the first set, Macalester had 11 attack errors and just four kills, as NCU dominated play en route to a 25-15 win. But the Scots quickly put their slow start in the rearview mirror, tallying 15 kills and a .367 hitting percentage in the second set. Junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) had six kills, while junior
Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) and first year
Stephanie Geber (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) added three kills apiece in the set.
The third set was more of the same, with Macalester leading by as many as nine points in the 25-16 win. King put away four kills and Lowe had three kills in the third set. Facing defeat, the Rams fought hard in the fourth set, staying close until late. Clinging to a 17-15 lead, the Scots registered five straight points and closed out the match on an 8-1 run, including three kills by King and two kills from Geber. The win is the sixth in the past seven games for Macalester.
King finished with 16 kills and 16 digs to lead the Scots in both categories. First year
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Geber both had eight kills, while Lowe contributed seven kills. First year setter
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) recorded 40 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, sophomore
Anna Fritz (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) totaled four blocks, and first year
Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/YES Prep Northbrook) added 12 digs.
Macalester hosts Carleton on Friday, Sept. 17 in the first MIAC match of the season. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
