Minneapolis, Minn.- The Macalester College volleyball team Swept North Central in three straight sets in dominating fashion to earn first victory of the spring season. The Scots are now 1-0 while North Central falls to 3-9 (1-7 UMAC) after tonight's loss to Macalester.
The Scots combined for 38 kills as a team while hitting for a solid .253 percent. The Scots also tallied 12 aces on the night. Macalester also managed to hold North Central to a -12 hitting percentage.
Macalester was led by sophomore Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont). Lowe played in all three sets and was two digs shy of a double-double with 13 kills, eight digs, and four aces on the night while hitting .320 percent. Sophomore Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) had a solid night with seven kills and seven digs with a .353 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) led the match with 17 total digs. Junior Claire Loomans (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) also totaled 21 assists and two aces through all three sets.
Lowe put the Scots on the board in set one with a kill assisted by Loomans to tie the score at 1 apiece. Both teams were going back and forth until Macalester scored 7 straight points to take a 16-9 lead. Macalester eventually went on to take set one by a score of 25-18.
The Scots used the momentum from set one to jump out to an early 8-5 lead. NCU responded by knotting the score up at 16 before Macalester scored nine straight points to win set two by a score of 25-16.
Macalester jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back as they were able to maintain a comfortable lead the rest of the set. The Scots took set three by a score of 25-17. Â
Macalester will take on St. Catherine University at home Wednesday, Apr. 7 at 7:00 pm. The Scots will honor seniors in their lone home match of the spring season.
