Late Inning Rallies from the Johnnies Plague the Scots in Double Header Loss

Collegeville, Minn.- The Macalester College baseball team fought hard but late inning rallies from Saint John's University propelled the Johnnies over the Scots in both games. Macalester now falls to 6-14 (6-14 MIAC) o the season while Saint John's improves to 22-8 (12-7 MIAC).
 
In game one, both teams remained scoreless until St. John's took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Macalester responded in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Kenny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George School) singled through the left side then sophomore Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) reached on an error. Junior Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) then reached on an infield single to load the bases for the Scots. Senior Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) was hit by a pith the very next at bat to plate a run and keep the bases loaded.
 
Sophomore Erik Hager (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced Lincoln to third while bringing Margolis home to tie the game at 2-2. Macalester then took a 3-2 lead after Hager got into a rundown which resulted in Lincoln scoring. Hager stayed in the rundown long enough for Lincoln to score before getting tagged out at first base.
 
SJU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Scots then regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning Lincoln hit a double down left field line to score Margolis. The Johnnies took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
Macalester scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead over St. John's. Hager reached base on a walk and junior Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) singled to center field to put runners on at first and second. First year Matt Odom (Glendale, Calif./St. Francis) singled to load the bases for the Scots. Moreno doubled the very next pitch to bring in two runs for Macalester. Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly the very next at bat to score Odom and give the Scots a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Johnnies eventually ended up working the bases loaded before walking off on a single to win game one by a score of 8-7.

The Johnnies took a 3-0 lead after four innings of play in game two. In the top of the sixth inning the Scots got on the board with two runs. Junior Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) walked and later advanced after Odom hit a ground rule double. Moreno struck out swinging but induced a throw from the catcher to first base which brought Helton in. The next at bat, Lincoln fit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Odom and make the score 3-2 in favor of SJU.
 
Saint John's took a 5-2 lead after the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the eighth inning, Helton led off with single to the shortstop and Moreno was hit by a pitch the very next at bat. Lincoln then singled to center to load the bases. Senior Jack Sahargun (Coto De Caza, Calif./Tesoro) reached on a fielder's choice and brought in a run. First year Matt Mukai (Foster City, Calif./Aragon) then singled to bring in Moreno. The Scots ultimately fell 5-4 to Saint John's.
 
Macalester will host Carleton College in a MIAC double-header on Saturday, May 1.
