Minneapolis, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team improves to 1-0 (1-0 MIAC) after taking down Augsburg by a score of 19-16. The Scots tallied seven extra-base hits, three of which were homeruns. Augsburg falls to 2-9 (0-3 MIAC) after dropping game one of the three-game series.
Both teams were scoreless until the third inning. Senior Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) led the inning off with a single. A couple of at-bats later, sophomore Joe Margolis (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) singled to left field with two outs to advance Fried to third base. Margolis stole second and senior Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, MD./Walter Johnson) walked to load the bases. Junior Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a grand slam with two strikes and two outs to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Scots.
Augsburg answered back with six runs of their own from a combination of timely hits and walks in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 6-4.
Macalester tied the game up at 6-6 after Fried reached on a single and senior Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) drove him in with a two-run blast. Junior Anthony Palma (Moorseville, N.C./Lake Norman) walked and later scored on a throwing error to help the Scots take a 7-6 lead. Junior Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) hit a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning to extend the Scots lead to 8-6.
After Macalester took a 10-6 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, Augsburg answered back by taking an 11-10 lead. Three singles, two walks, and a double from Ty Gage aided the five-run inning from the Auggies.
The Scots answered back with seven runs in the top of the seventh to give Macalester a 17-11 lead. Augsburg responded in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to make the score 17-14.
Macalester added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to make the score 19-14. The Auggies attempted to make a comeback but fell short only scoring two runs. First year Matt Rade (Westborough, Mass./St. John's) was able to shut the door and pick up the first save of his career.
Rade pitched 2.2 innings, only allowing two hits and giving up one earned run. Sophomore Alec Deegan (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) picked up the win. Deegan threw 3.1 innings and struck out seven batters. Seven Scots recorded multiple hits.
Macalester will be back at home for a doubleheader against Augsburg on Apr., 3. The first game starts at 1:00 pm and the second game is set to start at 3:30 pm.
