Water Polo: Macalester Ends Season with Dominating Performance against Carthage

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team outscored Carthage College, 35-9 in two matches Sunday afternoon at Riley Pool. The games marked the end of the 2021 spring season for the Scots, who won by scores of 15-2 and 20-7 in their only home matches of the season.

After playing two close games at Carthage on Friday, Macalester left little doubt early in Game 1 on Sunday, leading 5-1 and 8-2 after each of the first two quarters. The Scots then held Carthage scoreless over the final two quarters while finding the net seven times to close out the win. Sophomore Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led the way with five goals, while junior Annika Krueger (Emerald Hills, Calif./Sequoia) and sophomore Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) added four and three goals, respectively.

Momentum stayed with the Scots at the start of the second game, as Macalester jumped out to a 5-0 lead, including three goals by Hollingsworth. Carthage found its scoring touch late in the quarter, closing on a 3-2 run to make the score 7-2 Scots after eight minutes. Macalester pushed its lead to 10-4 by halftime, then outscored Carthage, 10-3 the rest of the way.

Hollingsworth finished with six goals, with senior Adeline Steward-Nolan (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) scoring four goals in her final game as a Scot. Steward-Nolan was honored prior to the second match as the team's lone senior. Krueger and junior Riley Waters (Portland, Oregon/St. Mary's Academy) scored three goals apiece, while Michaud and first year Gabriela Weiner (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) each had two goals.

Both goalkeepers, junior Honor Kalala (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and first year Laurel O'Hare (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) weren't tested often, but made excellent saves when called upon.

Macalester, which won three consecutive CWPA tournaments from 2017-19, returns nine of its 10 players from this season.
