Men’s Soccer: Macalester Plays at Carleton in MIAC Semifinals

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team continues its run in the MIAC Playoffs with a semifinal match at Carleton at 2:00 p.m. today. The fifth-seeded Scots beat No. 4 Augsburg, 3-2 in a thrilling comeback on Monday. The Knights received a bye to the semifinals as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

In Monday's quarterfinal match at Augsburg, senior midfielder Omar Anwar (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) scored on a free kick in the 25th minute to put Macalester ahead, 1-0. The Auggies rallied in the second half with two goals 14 minutes apart to take a 2-1 advantage. Undeterred, the Scots came back to tie on an unassisted goal by junior forward Silas Southworth (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountains Regional) in the 73rd minute. Just five minutes later, senior midfielder Jack Muller (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) to a shot from a sharp angle that bounced off the far post and caromed straight out to senior forward Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), who blasted a shot into the goal for what would be the game-winning tally.

The win improved Macalester's overall record to 9-8-1 on the season, including a 5-4-1 mark in conference play that placed the Scots fifth in the MIAC standings.

Carleton (8-2) earned the No. 2 seed with an 8-2 record in the conference. In the regular-season meeting between Macalester and the Knights on Oct. 16 in Northfield, Marco de Cunha scored the game's only goal in the 70th minute to lift Carleton to a 1-0 victory. This is the Scots' third meeting with the Knights in the MIAC Playoffs, with Macalester leading 2-1. The Scots beat Carleton in the 2009 championship game and the 2017 quarterfinals, while the Knights earned a semifinal win in the 2018 semifinals. Each game ended with a 1-0 outcome.

Macalester has a 6-3 record in the semifinal round of the MIAC Playoffs, and a 10-9-1 record in all MIAC Playoff games. The other semifinal has No. 6 Saint John's, which upset No. 3 Gustavus in overtime, visiting top-seeded and 12th-ranked St. Olaf. The semifinal winners will advance to Saturday's championship match, with the highest remaining seed serving as host.

Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Northfield. Links to live video and stats can be found on the Macalester Athletics website.
