ST. PAUL, Minn. – ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team begins the postseason today with a quarterfinal match at Augsburg at 5:00 p.m. in the MIAC Playoffs. The Scots are the fifth seed, while the Auggies earned the No. 4 seed.
This is the seventh consecutive appearance in the MIAC Playoffs for Macalester, who finished the regular season 8-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play. The Scots are led by first year forward
Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy), who has eight goals and four assists for 20 points this season. Junior forward
Silas Southworth (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountains Regional) also had had a solid season with six goals, while senior midfielder
Rohit Shah (Sunnyvale, Calif./Harker School) is second on the team with three assists. Defensively the Scots are led by All-MIAC defender
Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) and senior goalkeeper
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield).
Augsburg, 12-5-1 overall, placed fourth in the MIAC standings with a 6-3-1 record. The Auggies feature Kobby Owu, who has eight goals and three assists this fall. In the regular-season meeting between Augsburg and the Scots on Sept. 18 at Edor Nelson Field, Owu tallied the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Auggies win. Macalester held a 16-7 advantage in shots, with Fink making two saves in goal.
Macalester has a 2-1-1 record in the quarterfinal round of the MIAC Playoffs, and a 9-9-1 record in all MIAC Playoff games. The Scots won the 2009 playoff title. The quarterfinal winners will advance to Wednesday's semifinals, with regular-season champion St. Olaf hosting the lowest remaining seed, and No. 2 Carleton hosting the other semifinalist.
Macalester students who attend the game will receive free admission courtesy Macalester Athletics. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at
