ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball earned its second MIAC victory with a four-set win over Concordia College, 25-23, 9-25, 25-18, 26-24 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots improve to 11-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Cobbers drop to 6-12, 0-5 MIAC.
The result marks Macalester's first victory over Concordia since Sept. 20, 2000, snapping a 19-match losing streak to the Cobbers.
In the first set, the Scots trailed, 23-21 before tallying the next four points, including kills by sophomore
Anna Fritz Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) and first years
Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen) and
Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), to take the set, 25-23. Concordia dominated the second set, scoring the final 10 points to turn a 15-9 lead into a 25-9 win. The third set saw junior
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) take over with nine kills in a 25-18 victory.
In the fourth set, the Scots built a 14-8 lead, only to have the Cobbers chip away, eventually creating set point, 24-23. But back-to-back kills by King and Preston, followed by an attack error by Concordia, gave Macalester the set and the match, 26-24.
King led the Scots with 20 kills and a .283 hitting percentage to go with 12 digs. Preston notched 11 kills and seven digs, with Wooten adding nine kills. First year
Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) kept the offense running efficiently with 46 assists and paced the defense with 17 digs. First year
Jill MacInnis (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and junior
Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) were key players on defense with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Brook Carney and Hannah Keil each had 11 kills to lead the Cobbers.
Next up for Macalester is a MIAC match at Augsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 13. The match starts at 7:00 p.m. in Minneapolis.
