Men’s Soccer: Wagner’s Late Goal Lifts Macalester Past Saint John’s

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior midfielder Ben Wagner (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored the game's only goal in the 83rd minute, as the Macalester College men's soccer team defeated Saint John's, 1-0 in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Johnnies fall to 7-6-1, 4-4 MIAC.

The win keeps the Scots ahead of the Johnnies in the conference standings in fifth place heading into the final week of the regular season. The top six teams make the MIAC Playoffs.

With neither team able to score in a back-and-forth affair, senior midfielder Jack Muller (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) sent a perfect through-pass to the feet of Wagner, who had a step on his defender. With Johnnies' goalkeeper Evan Siefken coming out off his line, Wagner calmly pushed the ball passed Siefken and into the open goal for a 1-0 lead. The goal is Wagner's fourth of the season, as seniors Wagner and Muller connected for the game-winner on Senior Day.

The Scots outshot Saint John's, 12-8, but senior goalkeeper Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) had to make six saves for the shutout. Siefken finished with three saves for the Johnnies.

Before the game, the Scots honored their seniors Fink, Muller, Wagner, Omar Anwar (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area), Quinn Frankovsky (Boulder, Colo./Boulder), Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial), Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Rohit Shah (Sunnyvale, Calif./Harker School).

Macalester plays its final regular-season home game on Tuesday, Oct. 26 against Saint Mary's. The MIAC match begins at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
