Women’s Soccer: Bieda’s OT Goal Gives Macalester the Win

St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team played a conference match against Hamline on the road. Both sides were evenly matched, but Macalester came out on top 1-0.

The Scots wasted no time, putting up shots early and often from seniors Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, PA/Radnor), junior Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, IA/Decorah), and sophomore Livi Novello (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing). The Scots continued to press forward but were denied by the Pipers.

In the second half, the Scots again took to the attack with a shot from Lesmeister just four minutes into the half. In the 57th, sophomore Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) had a shot saved by Hamline's keeper. With both teams scoreless after 90 minutes, the game went into overtime. Bieda stepped up and put one into the back of the net in the 95th minute, off an assist from junior Lily Lorenzen (San Francisco, CA/Urban School of San Francisco).

Senior goalkeeper, Dana Gustafson (Ames, IA/Ames) made five great saves to keep Hamline scoreless. The Scots' record is now 6-3-1 (2-3-0 MIAC). The Scots' next match will be Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. They will play University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Macalester Stadium.
