St. Paul, Minn. – Macalester College women's soccer team played a non-conference match against University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The match was physical and was a back-and-forth battle, but Macalester came out on top, 2-0.
The first half began with both teams getting a feel for the game. In the 11
th minute, the BluGolds were awarded a penalty kick. However, the Scots' senior goalkeeper,
Dana Gustafson (Ames, IA/Ames) made an outstanding save to deny the BluGolds. Sophomores
Livi Novello (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and
Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) each had a shot saved by the BluGolds' keeper.
In the second half, the Scots looked to go up a goal quickly. They succeeded with a goal from senior
Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) with a low shot to the corner in the 54
th minute. She was assisted by fellow senior,
Hannah Conner (Madison, Wis./Madison West). Although the BluGolds looked to answer back, Gustafson made four saves to keep a clean sheet. To solidify the win, Bieda would go on and score again in the 87
th minute, this time assisted by junior
Lucy Grochulska (Henrico, VA/Henrico).
The Scots' record is now 7-3-1 (2-3-0 MIAC). The Scots' next match will be Saturday, Oct. 9, at 6:00 p.m. They will play a conference game against St. Catherine University at Macalester Stadium.
