MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Macalester College water polo team began its conference schedule with a split of two CWPA games Saturday at Monmouth College. The Scots lost to Austin College, 13-8 before defeating Carthage, 10-6 to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Against Austin, Macalester trailed, 4-1 before scoring twice in the final minute of the first quarter. Senior
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) had all three goals for the Scots in the first period. Austin took control of the match by outscoring Macalester, 4-1 in the second quarter to lead 8-4 at halftime. Senior
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) scored back-to-back goals to start the third quarter to make the score 8-6, but Austin closed out the match on a 5-2 run to clinch the victory.
Galasso finished with four goals, while Mullery had three goals. Sophomore
Annika Krueger (Emerald Hills, Calif./Sequoia) also found the net.
In the victory over Carthage, the Scots broke a 3-3 tie in the second quarter with three straight goals, including two from Mullery, to lead 6-3 at halftime. The Macalester defense stood tall in the third quarter, as the Scots kept Carthage off the scoreboard while getting two goals from Galasso and another from first year
Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) to lead 9-3. The Lady Reds scored three goals and allowed one to Galasso in the fourth quarter, as Macalester closed out its second win over Carthage this season.
Galasso tallied six goals in the second game to give her 10 for the day. Krueger had the other goal against Carthage for the Scots.
Macalester continues play at Monmouth on Sunday, Mar. 8 with matches against Wittenberg at 11:30 a.m. and Monmouth at 3:00 p.m.
