Men’s Basketball: Big Second Half Helps Macalester Beat Carleton, 71-60

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team outscored Carleton College, 43-31 in the second half to defeat the Knights, 71-60 in a MIAC contest Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots, who honored their four seniors before the game, improve 7-14 overall and 4-12 in conference play, while Carleton falls to 9-13, 6-11 MIAC.

Macalester started its seniors and received a pair of threes from senior guard Nathan Davies (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and another by senior guard Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) to jump out to an 11-7 lead. The Knights scored the next nine points to take a 13-11 edge. The game went back and forth from there, as the lead changed hands nine times over the next 8:20. A basket by sophomore center Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) and two free throws from junior forward Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) gave the Scots a 28-25 edge with 2:49 left in the half. But Carleton tallied the final two baskets of the half to take a 29-28 advantage at the break. The Knights shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half compared to 35.7 percent for Macalester.

The score was tied 33-33 early in the second half when the Scots used a 12-0 run to pull ahead, 45-33 with 13:14 to play. Henningfield scored four points in the run, with sophomore guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) and junior guard Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo./New Hampton School) each hitting threes. The lead grew to 13, 47-34 before Carleton scored the next eight points to cut the deficit to five, 47-42 with 8:19 on the clock.

Later in the second half, the Knights used a three from Kent Hanson and a conventional three-point play by Alex Battist to come within two, 58-56 with 3:12 remaining. After a McFarland free throw and a missed shot by Carleton, Sathy drained a three-pointer to give the Scots some breathing room, 62-56 at the 2:25 mark. Two free throws helped the Knights make it a four-point game, but junior guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) made 5-of-6 from the line and McFarland scored four points to wrap up the win for Macalester.

The Scots shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, in the second half while limiting Carleton to 28.6 percent shooting after halftime. Henningfield scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Sathy finished with four three-pointers and 14 points, while McFarland had 10 points and three steals. Ramos turned in a solid all-around game with nine points, nine boards and six assists. Davies made three three-pointers to finish with nine points. Hanson led the Knights with 16 points.

Before the game, Macalester honored seniors Davies, Smith, Mike Babb (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) and Levon Keller-Chavez (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) and their families.

Macalester hosts No. 2 Saint John's on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in another MIAC match-up. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
