Men’s Basketball: Macalester Falls to No. 2 Saint John’s Despite Double-Double from Henningfield

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team lost a MIAC game to No. 2 Saint John's University, 82-59 Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 7-15 overall and 4-13 in conference play, while the Johnnies improve to 22-1, 18-0 MIAC.

Macalester took control of the game early with a 15-4 run that put the Scots on top, 22-11 at the 10:27 mark. Senior guard Nathan Davies (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), junior forward Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman), junior guard Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) and sophomore guard Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) each hit three-pointers in the run. Saint John's responded by scoring the next 14 points, eventually outscoring Macalester, 28-6 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 39-28 halftime lead. The Johnnies shots 53.3 percent from the floor in the first half while building a 24-2 advantage in points scored in the paint.

A pair of three-pointers by Henningfield early in the second half helped the Scots pull to within eight, 42-34. Again Saint John's answered, reeling off a 20-3 spree over the next five minutes to take a commanding 62-37 advantage. Threes from Ramos, Henningfield and senior guard Mike Babb (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) helped cut the deficit to 15, 64-49 with 9:43 to play. But that's as close as Macalester would get, as the Johnnies wrapped up their 22nd win in a row and the second victory of the season over the Scots.

Henningfield made a career-high six three-pointers and finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Ramos finished with 11 points and three assists, while Sathy had 10 points. Jubie Alade tallied 13 points to lead six players who scored in double-figures for Saint John's.

Macalester plays its final home game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday, February 15, when Augsburg visits the Leonard Center. The MIAC game starts at 1:00 p.m.
