ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost to visiting Saint Mary's University in three sets in a MIAC match Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots fall to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the Cardinals improve to 9-6, 1-1 MIAC.
In the first set, Saint Mary's took an early 12-4 lead. Macalester came back to cut the deficit to four multiple times, including 21-17. But the Cardinals tallied four of the final six points to take the set, 25-19. Then in the second set, Macalester trailed 10-3 before battling back to make it a one-point game, 13-12. With the score 20-17 Saint Mary's, the visitors scored four consecutive points to move one point away from winning the set. The Scots fought back again, registering the next four points, including two kills from first year outside hitter
Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont), before the Cardinals closed out the set, 25-21. The third set was all SMU, as the Cardinals scored the first 12 points en route to a 25-15 win and the sweep.
First year outside hitter
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) led the Scots with nine kills to go with 11 digs. Lowe finished with eight kills and seven digs, while sophomore setter
Claire Loomans (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) recorded 25 assists. First year
Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) tallied 14 digs. SMU's Lexi Barth led all players with 12 kills.
Macalester continues MIAC action with a home match against Augsburg on Saturday, Sept. 28. The match begins at 3:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
