Volleyball: Macalester Falls to #14 Augsburg in Three Sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. – In their third match of the MIAC season, the Macalester volleyball team fell to #14 Augsburg in straight sets. The Scots are now 3-12 on the year and 0-3 in the MIAC while the Auggies improve to 13-2 and 3-0 in conference play.

The Macalester offense was led by first year Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) who tallied a team-high nine kills in the contest. First year Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) contributed with five kills of her own and Sofia Parmelee (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) chipped in with four. Sophomore Claire Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) directed the offense for most of the match, dishing out a season-high 12 assists.

Defensively, libero Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) had 15 digs throughout the match. She was helped by senior Hannah Detlaff (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) who had nine digs and Lowe who had eight.

In the first set, the Auggies got off to a quick start, leading Macalester 10-2. They used this momentum to carry them to a 25-11 first set win, hitting 0.357 in the set.

Augsburg started fast in set two as well, taking an early 8-2 lead. A kill from King and two from Parmelee got the Scots back in it, as they fought their way back to be within two for the majority of the set. The Auggies used a late four-point run to pull away, taking the second set 25-18. The Scots had a match-high 12 kills in set two, being led by King who had six of those kills.

In the final set, the Auggies started on a 5-0 run, but Macalester again worked back to get within two at 14-12. However, Augsburg scored 10 of the next 12 points to pull ahead, eventually winning 25-16.

The Scots will end their three-game homestand on Wednesday, October 2nd when they will host Saint Benedict at 7 p.m.
