Women’s Soccer: Bieda Scores Twice in 3-2 OT Loss to St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Alice Bieda (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downer's Grove North) continued to be a strong offensive force for the Macalester women's soccer team, scoring twice in the team's 3-2 overtime loss to St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon.

Bieda started off the scoring in the game, giving the Scots an early 1-0 lead within the first five minutes of play. Goalkeeper Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) punted the ball past the half line and Bieda chased it down getting past all defenders and taking advantage of a defensive miscommunication, putting the ball in the bottom left of the net.

After the goal, Bieda continued to be a threat for the Scots, taking three more shots in the span of eight minutes. One shot missed wide, one had to be saved, and the final shot was taken well outside of the box, missing just high.

In the 25th minute the Oles tied it up. A St. Olaf corner kick was cleared by the Macalester defense to the top of the box, but Grace Maxwell took the ball and lifted a shot up into the top right corner of the goal to make it 1-1.

Ten minutes later St. Olaf added another goal to take a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

To open the second half, the Oles got three shots off, but Kayla Togneri stopped all three to keep the game within one. Despite being outshot 12-2 in the half, the Scots were the ones to score, with Bieda taking a pass from teammate Kate Ellerd (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) and finishing the play with a goal in the top left corner of the net. This was Bieda's fourth goal of the year, tying the game in the 82nd minute.

The Oles put together a final offensive effort in the dwindling minutes of regulation, taking four shots, but the Scots were able to force overtime keeping the score tied at 2-2.

Three minutes into the overtime, St. Olaf was able to find the back of the net, ending the game with a 3-2 decision.

Togneri ended with seven saves on the day and Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) also recorded a shot for the Scots.

Macalester will return to action on Tuesday, September 24th, traveling to St. Scholastica. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
