DULUTH, Minn. – In their sixth road game of the year, the Macalester women's soccer team fell 2-0 to St. Scholastica on a cloudy afternoon in Duluth. The Saints scored once in each half, which the Scots were unable to counter, even though they held the overall edge in shots in the game.
With the loss, Macalester moves to 8-3-1 in their all-time series history with St. Scholastica. This was the Scots' first loss to the Saints since the 2012 season, when St. Scholastica came away with a 2-1 win.
In today's game, the first half went back-and-forth with the Saints holding a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. St. Scholastica especially stepped up their offense in the later part of the half, taking three shots within the span of five minutes.
The Saints were rewarded with their third attempt in this time frame as first year Brea Archer got past the Macalester defenders and lifted her shot over goalkeeper
Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura), finding the back right of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
St. Scholastica threatened again only minutes later, getting a header shot off a corner kick, but Togneri was able to preserve the score with a save, keeping the Scots within one heading into the halftime break.
Sophomores
Alice Bieda (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downer's Grove North) and
Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) were both active on offense for Macalester in the first half, each taking two shots.
In the second half, the Scots' offense really got going after the 70
th minute, as they took seven shots in the final 20 minutes of the game. Despite this aggressiveness, the Saints were the ones who scored, getting a goal in the 80
th minute when sophomore Morgan Friday found her way past a few Macalester defenders and buried a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal.
Junior
Georgia Kazemi (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) paced the Macalester offense in the second half, taking three shots. Bieda and
Yukeria Haywood (Stone Mountain, Ga./Marist School) each chipped in with two shots apiece.
Togneri and junior
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) split the goalkeeping duties in the game, with Lawhead taking over in the second half.
The Scots return to their MIAC schedule on Saturday, hitting the road once again, this time to take on Saint Benedict. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph.
