Volleyball: Macalester Beats Crown in Four Sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team earned a four-set victory over visiting Crown College, 25-18, 18-25, 25-13, 25-21 Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots improve to 2-9 on the season, while the Storm falls to 2-6.

After the two teams exchanged identical 25-18 wins in the first set, Macalester took control of the match in the third set, jumping out to a 10-1 lead and never looking back. Junior middle hitter Sofia Parmelee (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) and first year Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) each had four kills in the set. With Macalester clinging to an 18-17 edge late in the fourth set, the Scots scored three straight points for a 21-17 advantage. That would prove to be enough separation, as Macalester held on to win the set and match, 25-21. First year outside hitter Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) and senior middle hitter Ashley Helfinstein (Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead) tallied five and four kills in the set, respectively.

King finished with a career-high 15 kills to go with seven digs, while Lowe registered 14 kills and 11 digs for her first career double-double. Parmelee contributed 10 kills and a team-best four blocks, while sophomore setter Claire Loomans (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) delivered 34 assists. First year Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) racked up 31 digs to pace the Scots' defensive efforts. Crown was led by Gracie Zieroth with nine kills.

Macalester begins MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Carleton. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
