Women’s Soccer: Second Half Goal Sinks Scots Against Falcons

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After four games on the road, the Macalester women's soccer team finally got the chance to play at home, falling to the University of Wisconsin River Falls Falcons 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Scots outshot the Falcons in both halves, recording a 15-7 edge in shots throughout the contest, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. However, it was the Falcons that were able to find the back of the net, scoring the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

Macalester was especially active offensively in the first 22 minutes, taking seven of their eight shots of the half in this time frame. One of the team's best chances was when sophomore Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) got an open look in the middle of the box in the 22nd minute, but the Falcon's goalkeeper made a save to preserve the tie.

Despite holding little of the possession in the beginning of the second half, the Falcons were able to score a little over 15 minutes in, taking advantage of a corner kick to head in a goal in the top left corner.

After UW-River Falls made it 1-0, the Scots turned up their offensive intensity even more, taking five additional shots to try to even the score. First year Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) was close to tying it up in the 79th minute, putting a tough shot on goal, but the Falcon's goalie made an impressive save to knock the ball over the net.

Sophomore Alice Bieda (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downer's Grove North) was a force on offense for the Scots in the game, taking seven shots throughout her 79 minutes played. Hamilton and Eckstein also had multiple shots in the contest.

Junior goalie Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) made four saves in net for the Scots, as she still paces the MIAC in saves on the year, now with 35.

Macalester has ten days off before returning to action. The team will play again on September 21st when they travel to St. Olaf for their second conference match of the year. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Northfield.
