ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team fell to UW-Superior in three sets, 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 in a non-league match Wednesday night in the Leonard Center. This is the second loss to the Yellowjackets this season, following a 3-1 decision on Aug. 31.
After UW-Superior controlled play in the first two sets, the Scots (1-9) held the upper hand for most of the third set. Five straight Macalester points put the Scots on top, 15-9 midway through the set. Later in the set, a kill by first year outside hitter
Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) gave Macalester a 20-17 edge. But the Yellowjackets tallied eight of the next nine points to close out the set, 25-21 and sweep the match.
Lowe finished with eight kills and eight digs, while senior
Ashley Helfinstein (Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead), junior
Sofia Parmelee (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) and first year
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) each had five kills. Sophomore setter
Claire Loomans (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) notched 26 assists. Defensively, King tallied 10 digs and Parmelee and junior
Kendall Ford (Seattle, Wash./The Northwest School) had three blocks apiece. UW-Superior's Lexi Oeltjen led all players with 18 kills.
Macalester hosts Crown College on Saturday, Sept. 14 in another non-conference match. The first serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
