Women’s Soccer: Scots conclude Iowa road trip with loss to Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Macalester women's soccer team finished up their season-opening road trip in Iowa with a 4-0 loss against Loras on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots went into halftime trailing 1-0, but three second half goals put the game out of reach. The Duhawks started the game applying most of the pressure, taking four shots within the first ten minutes. Junior goalie Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) was kept busy for most of the half, saving four shots and breaking up many of Loras' offensive chances.

The Duhawks were finally successful in the 39th minute, as junior Brynn Jacobi lifted a shot from just outside the box that went over Togneri's head to break the 0-0 tie. The Macalester defense held strong for the rest of the half, keeping the score 1-0 after the first frame.

Loras opened the second half with a quick goal, scoring within the first three minutes. They then added two more goals, scoring off a corner kick in the 65th minute and then off a penalty kick a little over a minute later to make it 4-0.

The Scots had some good chances of their own in the half, taking two shots and a corner kick within the span of two minutes in the middle of the half and later threatening off of a free kick in the 66th minute.

First year Sarah Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) paced the offense, taking three shots on the day, including one that was on net. Sophomore Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) was not far behind, taking two shots of her own.

Macalester plays next at UW-Stevens Point on Friday, September 6th and will open MIAC play on the following Monday against Hamline. The team's first home game is on Wednesday, September 11th against UW-River Falls.
