Women’s Soccer: Bieda Scores as Scots Fall to UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Macalester women's soccer team continued the start of their season with their third straight road game, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1. Sophomore Alice Bieda (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downer's Grove North) offered a bright spot for the Scots' offense, adding her second goal of the season in the game.

The Pointers put pressure on the Scots right out of the gate, scoring in the fifth minute of play. This lead was short-lived, however, as Bieda tied it up in the 17th minute.

This busy first portion of the game continued, as UW-Stevens Point took back the lead in the 25th minute. Both teams' offenses cooled off a little after that, with only four more shots being taken for the rest of the first half, none of which got past either goalkeeper.

The Pointers' offense continued to be aggressive in the second half, recording 15 shots throughout the 45-minute period. This offensive outburst included three shots in the 65th minute, one of which found the back of the net making it 3-1 in favor of UW-Stevens Point.

The Scots tallied three more shots in the half, although none were on net, allowing the Pointers to go on to earn the win.

In addition to Bieda's two shots, junior Aliya Mahmoud (Portland, Ore./Catlin Gable) also fired two shots for Macalester. Zoe Kross (Queen Creek, Ariz./Basha) and Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) recorded the final two shots in the game for the Scots.

Goalkeeper Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) had nine saves on the day.

The Scots will have the rest of the weekend off before starting conference play with a Monday contest against Hamline. The game will start at 4 p.m. at Hamline. The team will have their first home game of the season on Wednesday when they will take on UW-River Falls.
