Waverly, Iowa – The Macalester women's soccer team fell in their season-opener at Wartburg by a score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon. This was the first of three non-conference matches that the Scots will play before facing a MIAC opponent.
Macalester opened the scoring in the contest when sophomore
Alice Bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) scored in the 12
th minute. This was Bieda's third career goal.
The Scots would hold onto this lead for the next 14 minutes before Wartburg answered with a goal of their own in the 26
th minute of the game. Neither team was able to score again before the half-time break, keeping the score at one apiece after the first 45 minutes of play.
The Knights took over the lead early in the second half, scoring in the 57
th minute. They then tacked on an additional goal in the 76
th minute to seal the win.
Junior
Kayla Togneri (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) made a career-high 14 saves in net for Macalester throughout the game.
The Scots are back in action tomorrow, August 31, when they will take on Loras College on the road. The team then continues their road schedule against both UW-Stevens Point and Hamline before returning home on September 11 to face UW-River Falls at Macalester Stadium.
