Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College softball beat Augsburg University today 4- 0 and lost to the Auggies in the second game 8-5.
Neither team was able to score until the top of the fifth inning when the Scots scored all four of their runs. With junior Elena Youngdale (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy) on first, pinch running for sophomore Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie), sophomore
Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) reached first on a fielder's choice and Youngdale advanced to second. Sophomore
Molly Hurley (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) then hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both Youngdale and Meade.
Then junior Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) singled to load the bases for the Scots. Sophomore
Kennedy Kechely (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) stepped up and hit a two-RBI double to center field. Junior
Kaela Jackson (Seattle, Wash./James A. Garfield) then sent Carpenter home with a hit to second base. Up 3-0, the final run came as Kechely scored off a hit by senior
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont)'
Senior Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) pitched all innings of the win with 5 strikeouts a runless game. Migacz also through five innings in the loss to Augsburg adding three more strikeouts. She is fourth in the MIAC in strikeouts.
In the second game the Scots fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. The Scots then scored their first run in second as Meade hit a single to get on base and then scored as first year Emily Bergin (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal School) got out on a fielder's choice but sent Meade home.
In to the top of the third, down 4-1, the Scots went on a three-run scoring drive. With Kechely walked to first, Jackson hit a double down the left line and advanced Kechely home to make the score 4-2. Bergin then hit a single to right center to send Jackson home and put Meade on third. To tie the game 4-4, Lawhead flied out to left center but Meade made it home to score.
Then the Auggies took a one-run lead in the bottom of the third. The fourth and fifth inning went scoreless for both teams. Then Augsburg went up three more runs to make the score 8-4. O'Connor hit a double down left field to send Carpenter home in the top of the seventh inning. But the Scots could not make a last-inning comeback and lost 8-5.
The Scots play Sunday, Apr. 7, against Saint Mary's University in St. Paul, Minn.
