Baseball: Macalester Swept by St. Scholastica

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team fell to the College of St. Scholastica in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots, who lost 11-0 and 6-0, drop to 10-13 on the season, while the Saints improve to 15-8.

St. Scholastica scored a pair of runs in the second inning of Game 1 and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open with six runs in the sixth. Macalester put runners in scoring position four times but was unable to deliver the key hit. Sophomore Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) had two hits, including a double, to lead the Scots. Senior lefty Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) started and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three in three innings of work.

The Macalester bats stayed cold into the second game, as junior Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) recorded the Scots' first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) had Macalester's other hit, as Saints' pitcher Jerry Gooley tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout. St. Scholastica tallied three runs in the second inning and single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings for the win. Junior Henry Smith (New York, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, and three hits.

Macalester plays the University of Northwestern in a single non-conference game on Thursday, April 18, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
