ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team beat the University of Northwestern, 9-4 in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at Nicholson Field. The Scots improve to 11-13 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 14-13.
Northwestern scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to lead 2-0. Macalester responded in the bottom of the second with five runs on just one hit, an error, three walks and two hit-batsmen. First years
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and
Jack Hosley (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) drew bases-loaded walks, while first year
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and sophomore
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) were hit by pitches with the bases full.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) singled home sophomore
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro). Then in the sixth, a grounder by Sahargun plated Palma to make the score 7-2. After the Eagles scored a run in the top of the seventh, Moreno hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot over the right-field fence to make the score 9-3 after eight innings. Northwestern tallied a run in the top of the ninth, but the Scots closed out the win to defeat the Eagles for the second time this season.
Francalangia, Moreno and Palma each had two hits to lead the Macalester offense. On the mound, junior
Kieran Liming (Alpharetta, Ga./South Forsyth) held Northwestern to two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking three in six innings of work.
Macalester plays a non-conference game against Augsburg University at Parade Stadium on Friday, April 19, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
