Baseball: Macalester Downs Augsburg with Big Fifth Inning

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team used an 11-run fifth inning to defeat Augsburg University, 13-3 in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at Parade Stadium. The Scots improve to 12-13 on the season, while the Auggies drop to 7-19.

Macalester jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, when first year Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage Hill) singled home first year Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage). Augsburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third to lead 3-1. The Auggies held the upper hand until the top of the fifth, when the Scots exploded for 11 runs to take a commanding 12-3 advantage. First year Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) blasted a two-run home run, his second homer in as many games. First year Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) hit his MIAC-leading sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot that closed out the scoring in the fifth. Sophomore Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./The Field School) delivered a two-run single, while first year Alec Silverman (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) plated a run with a single. In the seventh, first year James Crutcher (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilnerding) singled home senior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) for a 13-3 lead.

Goldberg, Roe, Silverman and junior Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee School) had two hits apiece, with Roe driving in four runs. The pitching was strong as well, with sophomore Jake Greenberg (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) holding Augsburg to three runs, two earned, on four hits over five innings for his first collegiate victory.

Macalester returns to conference play with a doubleheader against Hamline University on Saturday, April 20. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at CHS Field in St. Paul.
