WINONA, Minn. – Senior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) went 6-for-6 at the plate as the Macalester College baseball team split a MIAC doubleheader with Saint Mary's University Monday afternoon at Max Molock Field. The Scots, who followed a 2-0 loss in Game 1 with an 8-4 victory, are now 10-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The Cardinals are now 14-12, 6-4 MIAC.
After Monday's performance, Low raised his MIAC-leading batting average to .544 on the season. Including last week's doubleheader against Augsburg on April 9, Low is 11-for-12 with four runs, two doubles, a home run and four walks in his past four games.
In the first game, Saint Mary's scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly, then added another run in the fifth inning after Matthew Piechowski tripled and scored on a single by Hunter Gustafson. Macalester put at least one runner on base in each inning but was unable to advance anyone past second base. Cardinals' pitcher James Green blanked the Scots on seven hits while striking out 11 batters.
Low, who was named the MIAC Athlete of the Week for baseball earlier today, continued to swing a hot bat with three singles in three at-bats. Senior
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) delivered two hits. Junior pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of work. Sophomore
Alex Denzler (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Macalester bounced back early in Game 2, with first year
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and sophomore
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) singling home runs in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead. In the second, first year
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit a two-run double and later scored on a single by Bucello to put the Scots on top, 5-0. The score remained 5-0 until the top of the seventh, when Low doubled home Moreno and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by senior
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton). First year
Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Bucello for an 8-0 advantage. Saint Mary's scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to prevent Macalester from earning the split.
Low was 3-for-3 with two runs, a run batted in and two walks. Moreno, Bucello and Sahargun had two hits apiece, as the Scots totaled 11 hits in the win. Sophomore
Will Madairy (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) turned in a strong outing on the mound, shutting out the Cardinals on three hits while fanning seven and walking two in six innings of work for the win.
Macalester will host a non-conference doubleheader against the College of St. Scholastica on Tuesday, April 16. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
