TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Marian University, 20-9 Wednesday afternoon as a part of the Tucson Invitational, held at the Kino Sports Complex. The Scots are now 3-2 on the season, while the Sabres improve to 7-1.
Macalester opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with senior
Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) doubling home first year
Lian Lincoln (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage), then later scoring on a single by sophomore
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro) for a 2-0 lead. Marian pulled even with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, only to have the Scots score three runs in the bottom of the third to lead 5-2. Senior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), first year
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) and Goldberg each scored unearned runs, with first year
Michael Moreno (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) driving in Goldberg with a single.
The Sabres broke open the game in the top of the fourth with seven runs on three hits, four walks, two hit-batsmen and an error to take a 9-5 lead. Nick Bastien hit a grand slam in the inning. Another run in the fifth made the score 10-5 before Low came home on a grounder by junior
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-6. Marian had another big inning in the sixth with six runs, adding four more in the eighth for a 20-7 bulge. Moreno tripled to score Sahargun in the seventh, and Roe hit a two-run homer in the eighth, his first as a Scot.
Lincoln, Roe, Sahargun and Moreno each had a pair of hits for Macalester. Junior pitcher
Kieran Liming (Alpharetta, Ga./South Forsyth) started and took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. Junior
Henry Smith (New York, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Macalester continues play at the Tucson Invitational on Thursday, Mar. 21 with a game against Wesleyan. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. PDT.
