Baseball: Strong Pitching Leads Macalester Past Buena Vista, 5-3

TUCSON, Ariz. – Macalester College pitchers held opposing batters to three hits as the Scots defeated Buena Vista University, 5-3 Sunday morning at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win improves Macalester's overall record to 2-1, while the Beavers fall to 5-6.

The Scots struck first in the top of the third inning by loading the bases on a hit by first year Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./The Blake School) and a pair of walks. With two out, the Buena Vista pitcher hit sophomore Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) to plate senior Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) with the game's first run. The Beavers pulled even with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, a groundout and a single by Peyton Renning, just the second hit off sophomore starter Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep).

In the top of the seventh, Macalester put runners on first and second with no outs. Roe bunted and beat out the throw, which went into right field and allowed two runs to score. The next batter, senior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont), doubled to deep centerfield, driving home Roe for a 4-1 lead. The Beavers made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of unearned runs that made the score 4-3. But a single by Low allowed Abelson to score from second in the top of the ninth, and sophomore pitcher Alex Denzler (New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School) retired BVU in order to close out the victory.

Polk gave up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight in six innings of work. Denzler earned the save with three solid innings, allowing two unearned runs and one hit while fanning four and walking one. At the plate, Low powered the Scots with four hits, including two doubles, and three runs batted in. Abelson and Roe each had two hits, with Abelson scoring three runs and walking twice.

Macalester faces Buena Vista again on Monday, Mar. 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Kino Sports Complex Field 4.
