TUCSON, Ariz. – The Macalester College baseball team posted a comeback victory over Buena Vista University, 7-5 Monday afternoon at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win is the second in as many days over BVU for the Scots, who improve to 3-1. The Beavers, who fell to Macalester 5-3 on Sunday, are now 5-7.
Macalester opened the scoring with runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. First year
Alec Silverman (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) led off the bottom of the second with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by sophomore
Zach Fried (Tai Tam, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International School). In the third, senior
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Leonardo Bucello (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). Buena Vista answered with a run in the top of the fourth, then took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Scots led off the inning with four straight hits, with Fried coming home on a double by junior
Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) and Bearden scoring on a single from first year
Michael Helton (Laguna Beach, Calif./Sage). Later in the inning, Bucello singled home sophomore
Matt Polemeni-Hegarty (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay), and sophomore
Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) hit a two-run double to plate Bucello and first year
Anthony Palma (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) for a 7-3 advantage. The Beavers scored twice in the top of the ninth with two out, but first year pitcher
Will Moscato (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) retired the final batter to close out the win.
Moscato pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory, holding BVU to two runs on four hits while fanning three without a walk. Senior lefty
Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) started the game and allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. Fried and Bearden led the Scots' bats with two hits apiece.
Macalester returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 20 with a game against Marian University. The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. PDT at Kino Sports Complex Field 4.
