ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College water polo team beat Monmouth College 16-10 today and lost to the Virginia Military Institute in their final matches of the Macalester College Invite.
Against Monmouth, Macalester took the lead in the first, 4-3, with two goals from senior Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron)and one each from Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./Mast Academy) and Riley Waters (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy). Moran tallied another goal as well as junior Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic), Mullery and sophomore Adeline Steward-Nolan (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) making the score 8-5.
By the beginning of the fourth quarter the Scots led 11-8 thanks to Galasso scoring two more and Waters tallying a goal in the third. Â Macalester then sealed the win with five goals in the fourth and won the game 16-10.
In the matchup between Macalester and VMI, the Keydets took the lead in the first quarter 3-1, the Scots goal coming from Moran. The Scots then nearly went toe-to-toe with VMI in the second as the Keydets scored four more goals and Macalester scored three goals. The points in the second quarter were tallied by Galasso who had two and senior
Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) who scored one.
In the third the Scots went scoreless as VMI tallied one more goal to make the score 8-4. Moran tallied one more goal as did first year Waters. But the Scots were unable to come up with a come back and lost to VMI 9-6.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) made 9 saves against VMI and  made 12 saves against Monmouth.
