ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team earned its first MIAC victory of the season with a 58-55 win at Hamline University Tuesday night at Hutton Arena. The Scots improve to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference, while the Pipers drop to 1-3, 0-2 MIAC.
Macalester trailed for most of the first half until an 11-2 run put the Scots on top, 27-24 with three minutes on the clock. Junior guards
Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo./New Hampton School) and
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) hit threes and sophomore guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) added a conventional three-point play in the run. Hamline answered with a 9-2 run to close out the half and take a 33-29 lead at the break. Sathy scored 10 points in the first half to lead the Scots.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Ramos and junior forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) to start the second half gave Macalester a 35-33 edge. Over the next three minutes, there were three ties and three lead changes before the Pipers grabbed a 46-41 lead with 12:13 to play. The Scots responded in a big way with a 15-4 spree that started with five points from Ramos and included seven points by Henningfield to make the score 56-50 Macalester with five minutes remaining.
From the five-minute mark to less than a minute to play, the only scoring was a free throw by Hamline's Luke Siwek. Henningfield broke the drought with a basket for a 58-51 lead with 38 seconds left. Five consecutive misses from the free throw line for the Scots, coupled with a pair of baskets by the Pipers, brought Hamline to within three, 58-55 with three seconds on the clock. The Pipers moved the ball into the front court and called a timeout with just over one second to play, but their three-point attempt was off the mark, ending the game in Macalester's favor.
The victory ended a 10-game losing streak to Hamline and was the first win in Hutton Arena for the Scots since the 2006-07 season, ending a 12-game road skid.
Henningfield led Macalester with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Ramos finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Sathy tallied 13 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center
Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) had a strong game inside with nine boards and two blocks to go with four assists. Siwek paced Hamline with 20 points.
The Scots resume play after the Thanksgiving break with another MIAC road contest at No. 7 St. Thomas on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
