ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game to fifth-ranked St. Thomas, 64-35 Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena. The loss gives the Scots a 4-4 record overall, including a 1-2 mark in conference play, while the Tommies improve to 6-1, 2-0 MIAC.
The game started well for Macalester, with junior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado), sophomore guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) and junior forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) hitting threes in a 15-8 run to open the first half. St. Thomas scored 10 of the next 11 points to take an 18-16 lead, the host's first of the game, at the 7:14 mark. Baskets by Ramos and Sathy sandwiched around a layup by Tommy Anderson tied the score at 20-20 with just over five minutes on the clock. From that point, the Tommies scored the next seven points, and after a free throw by Henningfield made the score 27-21, a fallaway, three-point jumper by Zach Theisen at the buzzer sent St. Thomas into the break with a 30-21 edge.
Macalester never recovered, as the Tommies started the second half with an 18-2 run to lead 48-23 with 13 minutes to play. The Scots came as close as 22 points the rest of the way, as St. Thomas held Macalester to 26.1 percent shooting from the field in the second half. The Scots recorded a 35-33 rebounding edge for the game but turned the ball over a season-high 25 times.
Henningfield finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while Ramos had 10 points, six boards and three assists. Sathy added eight points, with junior guard
Tyler McFarland (Denver, Colo./New Hampton School) grabbing eight rebounds.
Macalester hosts MIAC foe Bethel on Saturday, Dec. 7. The opening tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
