ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) tallied the 1,000th point of his career as the Macalester College men's basketball team fell to Bethel University, 79-57 in a MIAC game Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots drop to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Royals improve to 5-2, 3-1 MIAC.
Henningfield, who entered the game with 998 points in 58 career games at Macalester, scored on his first attempt, a layup one minute into the contest. He is the 23rd Scot to score 1,000 career points in the history of the men's basketball program.
After Bethel jumped out to a 13-6 edge, Macalester went on a 9-1 run with five points from Henningfield and four from junior guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) to take a 15-14 lead with 12:32 on the clock. The Royals regained the upper hand with a three-pointer by Isaiah Carver-Bagley and eventually pushed the lead to 30-23 with eight minutes left in the half.
A three from Ramos and a basket from sophomore guard
Eric Sathy (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) helped the Scots cut the deficit to four, 32-28, before Bethel closed out the half with a 9-2 run to make the halftime score 41-30. Macalester made 2-of-9 from three-point range in the half compared to 7-of-13 for the Royals.
The Scots started the second half with a pair of Henningfield baskets that sparked a 15-9 run that included six points from Ramos and a three by Sathy to make the score 50-45 Bethel with 12:55 to play. After both teams came up empty on their next possessions, Macalester appeared to get a stop on a missed shot that Henningfield rebounded. But a steal by Jack Jensen kept the ball with the Royals, and Hudson Urbanus hit a three for a 53-45 advantage. The play ignited a 16-4 run that put Bethel on top, 66-49 with five minutes left. The lead grew to as many as 27, as the Royals earned their third conference win of the season.
Henningfield finished with 23 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field to go with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Ramos registered 15 points, three boards and three assists, while sophomore center
Shane Anderson (Fargo, N.D./Davies) dished out a career-best seven assists. Carver-Bagley paced Bethel with 21 points.
