ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team lost a MIAC match to St. Catherine University, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 Wednesday evening in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 4-16 overall and 0-7 in the conference, while the Wildcats improve to 12-9, 2-5 MIAC.
Macalester played well early in the first set, using five straight points to build an 11-7 lead. Three of the points in the run came from service aces by senior defensive specialist
Deborah Pickford (Denver, Colo./East). The lead was 16-12 when St. Kate's tallied the next seven points to take control, 19-16. The Scots were within 22-20 when the Wildcats closed out the set with three of the final four points.
The second set also was close, with St. Kate's breaking a 14-14 tie with seven of the next eight points en route to a 25-19 victory. A slow start by Macalester in the third set put the Scots behind 17-5. Three kills from first year outside hitter
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) helped Macalester get as close as eight points before the Wildcats clinched the win with a 25-15 victory.
King led all players with 11 kills while hitting .308 for the match. She also added six digs. Sophomore setter
Claire Loomans (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) dished out 17 assists, while first year defensive specialist
Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) had 12 digs. Erin Cutts and Lauren Isaacson each had 10 kills to pace the Wildcats.
Macalester plays its final non-conference match on Saturday, Oct. 18 at home against Buena Vista University. The Scots will honor their seniors before the match, which starts at 3:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
