ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team fell to visiting Buena Vista University, 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center. The Scots are now 4-17 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 11-12.
Macalester battled in the first set and trailed 22-20 late before the teams traded points the rest of the way in the Beavers' 25-22 win. After Buena Vista controlled play throughout the second set in a 25-14 victory, the Scots fought back late in the third set. Down 18-10, Macalester pulled to within 23-20 before the Beavers notched the final two points to win the set and the match.
First year outside hitter
Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) led her team with six kills, while senior middle hitter
Ashley Helfinstein (Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead), junior middle hitter
Sofia Parmelee (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) and first year
Zoe Lowe (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) added five kills apiece. Defensively, first year defensive specialist
Katrina Schoen (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) had 14 digs and King finished with 11 digs. Taylor Caves led all players with nine kills.
Before the match, Macalester recognized its three seniors: Helfinstein, defensive specialist
Hannah Detlaff (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) and defensive specialist
Deborah Pickford (Denver, Colo./East).
The Scots return to MIAC action on Friday, Oct. 25 at No. 17 St. Thomas.
