Men's Soccer: Scots Beat Wartburg with Last Second Header

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team beat Wartburg College today in the final seconds of regular time and are now 1-0-1 on the season as they head to California next weekend for two road games.

After a stint of possession in the beginning of the match, the Scots went down 13 minutes into the game after a penalty kick was awarded to the Knights and converted.

Down 1-0, the Scots came back with 24 minutes left in the half with a goal by senior Clayton Smith (Plymouth, Minn./Wyzata). Smith volleyed a shot from around the 10 yard line after sophomore Robert Anigbogu (St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul) dribbled down the left flank, crossing the ball in past the outstretched Wartburg keeper.

The game continued to be a back and forth contest at both ends for the remainder of the half with the shot count in favor of Wartburg 6-4.

The second half continued much like the first with end to end physical play. Neither team had any clear goal scoring chance with the shots in favor of Wartburg 10-7 with ten minutes left in the game.

The game seemed to be heading into overtime when Macalester got a last second corner kick in the Wartburg half. Junior Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) took it with four seconds left and was headed cleanly into the back of the net by Smith for his second goal of the game and the season. Smith's last second effort sent the Scots to victory beating Wartburg 2-1.

The Scots return to play away on Friday, Sept. 7, away at Claremont-Mudd -Scripps Colleges in Claremont, Calif. at 7:00 p.m PST.
