ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team split their last double header today against Bethel University. The Scots will end the season 11-29, 5-17 in the MIAC.
Down 1-0 in the first game, the Scots took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore
Julia Carpenter (Stensville, Mich./Lakeshore) had a bunt single to send first year
Kate Bond (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy). The Scots second run came as senior
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) hit a ground out to the pitcher for an RBI, advancing junior pitcher
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West).
Bethel came back to score six runs in the third until the Scots scored three in the top of the fifth to make the score 10-5.
Audrey Meade (Cedar Hills, Utah/Pleasant Grove) hit her first hit of the game to get herself on base and scored her twenty-seventh run of the season thanks to another first year in
Kennedy Kechley (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) who hit a single to left field. With the bases loaded, junior
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) was walked to advance Carpenter and keep the bases loaded for the Scots final run of the game as first year
Kate Lawhead (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) reached first on a fielder's choice to send Kechely home for an unearned run. Bethel answered with two more runs and won 10-5.
In the second the game, the Scots beat Bethel in a high score game winning 13-10. The Scots started with the scoring in the top of the first with two runs by senior
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and junior Bean. With the bases loaded the Scots scored three consecutive runs. Junior Migacz got on base with a single up the middle and advanced to third after the Bethel pitcher walked first year
Emily Cekander (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) and Meade. Migacz then advanced home as Carpenter was also walked. Again, with the bases loaded Bean hit a single RBI to make it 4-1 as Cekander crossed home. And for the third time, bases loaded, first year Kechely advanced Meade after she was hit by a pitch.
Bethel closed the gap to 7-4 by the top of the sixth. But the Scots responded with four runs in the top of the inning. After O'Connor hit a single up the middle, and Lawhead the same, Migacz had her second hit of the night and her twelfth of the season to send O'Connor home with a double to right center field. With Meade on first after a walk and Migacz and Lawhead on second and third respectively, Bean stepped up to bat to hit her seventeenth double for a three run hit to make it 11-4.
In the top of the seventh the score 11-5, the Scots scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. And while Bethel scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, Macalester won their last game of the season 13-10.
In the first game three Macalester pitchers go time as Migacz, Meade and Cekander threw for the loss. In the second game, Cekander took home the win as she pitched six innings with two strikeouts. Migacz will end the year in fourth in MIAC strikeouts with 85.
