NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team swept a MIAC doubleheader against Carleton College, winning 3-2 and 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Mel Taube Field. The Scots improve to 17-12 overall and 7-5 in the conference, while the Knights fall to 7-14, 0-10 MIAC.
In the first game, Macalester scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on sacrifice flies from seniors
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) and
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson). Carleton made it 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second before McMullen delivered an RBI single that plated junior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) in the top of the third for a 3-1 edge. In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights scored a run and had runners on first and second with one out. But sophomore pitcher
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) induced a ground ball that was turned into a double play to end the game.
Plisko held Carleton to two runs on seven hits while striking out four and overcoming five walks in a complete-game effort to improve to 7-1 on the season. Sophomore
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee School) registered a pair of hits.
The Scots received another strong pitching performance in Game 2, with sophomore
Thomas Shogren (Woodbury, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) tossing a two-hit, complete-game shutout. Francalangia gave Macalester all the offense they needed with a two-run single in the top of the third. Senior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) drove in runs in the fourth and sixth innings for a 4-0 lead, then the Scots pushed three runs across in the seventh for a 7-0 edge. Brantner, McMullen and junior
Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) had RBIs in the seventh.
Brantner, Goldberg and first year
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tosoro) each registered two hits in the win. Shogren won his second straight start to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Scots take on Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday, Apr. 29 in another MIAC twinbill. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
