ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team registered its second straight sweep on the road with two victories over Gustavus Adolphus, 5-0 and 10-3, Sunday afternoon at the Gustie Baseball Field. The Scots, who are now 19-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference, are in fifth place in the MIAC but just one game behind the conference leaders. The Gusties drop to 12-15, 4-8 MIAC.
In the top of the first inning of Game 1, senior
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) led off with a single, then senior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) hit a one-out, two-run homer to give Macalester an early 2-0 lead. Then in the second, senior
Alex Baretta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) doubled and scored on a single by first year
Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tosoro) for a 3-0 advantage. Castagnetti led off the third with a triple and came home on a two-out double from junior
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont). Senior
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) drove in Low with a double to put the Scots on top, 5-0.
Senior pitcher
Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./West) did the rest, tossing a three-hit shutout while fanning eight and walking one to improve to 3-1 on the season. Castagnetti and Low each had two hits for Macalester.
In the second game, Gustavus scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the first inning by drawing four walks. Junior
Sam Goldberg (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) led off the top of the third with a home run to tie the game. Sophomore
Alex Bearden (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) came home later in the third on an error for a 2-1 Scots' lead. In the top of the fourth, Macalester exploded for eight runs to take a commanding 10-1 advantage. Sophomore
Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee School) blasted a grand slam for his first home run as a collegian, while Brantner hit his second home run of the day and fourth of the season, a three-run shot to right-centerfield. Baretta also had an RBI double in the inning.
McMullen and Sahargun delivered two hits apiece in the win. On the mound, first year
Andrew Polk (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) started and allowed three runs on two hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Jacob Simpson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll School) pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, blanking the Gusties on two hits while striking out one and walking none to earn the win.
The Scots play their first games at Nicholson Field this season on Tuesday, May 1 against St. Thomas. The MIAC doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m.
