Water Polo: Macalester to Compete at CWPA Division III Tournament This Weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College will attempt to defend its 2017 title this weekend at the CWPA Division III Championships Apr. 14-15 at the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa. The tournament includes eight teams and 12 matches that will determine the 2018 CWPA Division III champion.

Macalester enters the tournament as the top seed after posting a perfect 7-0 record against conference competition during the regular season. The Scots (11-4) will face Utica on Saturday, Apr. 14 at 9:20 p.m. Central.  The winner of that game will play at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, with the loser playing in the consolation bracket at 2:40 p.m. The championship match will be played at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.

In the Scots' seven conference matches against the field, Macalester outscored its opponents, 85-31 en route to the regular-season title. On Mar. 24, the Scots beat second-seeded Monmouth College, 10-9 in overtime in the closest of the seven league matches. Sophomore Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) leads Macalester with 28 goals in conference play, including 18 in her last three matches.

At last year's CWPA Championship, held at Macalester's Riley Pool, the Scots were the No. 2 seed and won three straight matches to capture their first CWPA Tournament crown.
