REDLANDS, Calif. – The Macalester College water polo team wrapped up its trip to California on Saturday, losing to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 12-7 and to No. 8 Redlands, 13-8 at the University of Redlands. The Scots, who are ranked seventh in the latest Division III national poll, fall to 8-4 following a 1-4 record in California that included an upset of No. 2 Cal Lutheran on Friday.
In the day's first game, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half, and the Scots never came closer than three goals the rest of the way. Junior
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and sophomores
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) and
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) each scored two goals, while junior
Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) added a goal. Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) made 12 saves for Macalester.
Against Redlands, the Scots surrendered three goals to start the game before tallying four straight to take a 4-3 lead with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Mullery, Galasso, Moran and senior
Brooke Finney (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) had the goals. Two Bulldog goals sandwiched around a tally from Mullery tied the match at 5-5 at the half. In the second half, Redlands found the net four times in each of the final two quarters to close out the win. Mullery finished with four goals, while Moran score twice. Finney and Galasso each added a goal and an assist. Overland ended up with eight saves.
The Scots return to CWPA conference play on Saturday, Mar. 24 with a pair of matches at Monmouth College.
