Baseball: Macalester Begins Season against St. Scholastica at US Bank Stadium

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team opened its 2018 campaign with a pair of losses to the College of St. Scholastica Tuesday afternoon at US Bank Stadium. The games pitted the 2017 playoff champions from the MIAC and UMAC, with the Saints coming out on top, 10-0 and 7-1.

In the first game, the Scots struggled at the plate with just one hit, a single from junior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) in the second inning. St. Scholastica struck for five runs in the second inning, including a three-run home run by Conor Wollenzien, as the Saints tallied 10 runs on 10 hits.

Macalester scored its first run of the new season in the fourth inning of Game 2. With the Scots trailing 3-0, senior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) hit a two-out single to right field and scored on a deep double off the bat of senior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). But Macalester managed two hits the rest of the way and six for the game, as St. Scholastica pounded out 15 hits and scored seven runs in the win. Senior lefty Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./West) started on the mound and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three in three innings.

The Scots will face UM-Morris in another non-conference doubleheader on Monday, Mar. 5 at U.S. Bank Stadium. The first game starts at 6:00 a.m.
