Baseball: Macalester Sweeps UM-Morris at US Bank Stadium

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team played its second of two doubleheaders this season at US Bank Stadium Monday morning, with the Scots sweeping UM-Morris, 9-4 and 15-3. Macalester evens its record at 2-2 on the season, while the Cougars open 2018 0-2.

In the first game, the Scots answered a UM-Morris run in the bottom of the third with a two-run double by senior Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the top of the fourth. Then in the sixth, Macalester broke the game open with four runs, including a two-run single from junior Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont). Low eventually scored on a triple by first year Sam Rosevear (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), and Rosevear came home on a grounder by first year Jack Sahargun (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro). Senior Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) delivered a two-run double in the seventh, with junior Andy Hayes (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) plating senior Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore pitcher Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga./Pace Academy) allowed an unearned run and two hits while striking out seven in four innings.

Junior Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) helped the Scots carry momentum into Game 2 by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a deep home run to center field. The bomb sparked a seven-run first inning that included a two-run single from sophomore Carl Francalangia (West Hartford, Conn./The Loomis-Chaffee School) and RBIs from Brantner and first year Cooper Jensen (Washington, D.C./The Field School). After the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the fourth, Macalester put five more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to lead 12-3. Francalangia, Jensen, Abelson and junior Sam Goldberg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) each drove in runs in the inning. The Scots tallied three more runs in the fifth on a RBI single from Hayes and a two-run double by Goldberg.

Senior pitcher Joe Trier (Madison, Wis./West) started the second game and blanked the Cougars on one hit, a walk and two strikeouts in three innings of work. Sophomores Kieran Liming (Alpharetta, Ga./South Forsythe) and Ethan Moskal (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Scots head to Tucson, Ariz., for 10 games at the Tucson Invitational Mar. 10-17. Macalester begins play with a doubleheader against Simpson College on Saturday, Mar. 10 at the Kino Sports Complex.
