KENOSHA, Wis. – The Macalester College water polo team made it three straight wins to open the 2018 season with an 11-5 victory over host Carthage College Sunday morning at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center. The Scots defeated Monmouth and McKendree at Carthage on Saturday in their first games of the season.
Macalester used a stingy defense to open up a 6-0 lead late into the second quarter. Sophomore
Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) scored twice in the run, with juniors
Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and
Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor), and sophomore
Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) scoring once. Junior goalkeeper
Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) also scored on a long shot from half tank at the end of the first quarter.
Carthage ended the Macalester run with a goal just two seconds before halftime. Goals by Galasso and senior
Hannah Gray (Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) early in the third quarter pushed the lead to 8-1, and Moran's tally late in the quarter following a Carthage goal made the score 9-2 Scots heading into the final quarter. Hoffman and Galasso found the net in the fourth quarter, as Macalester remained unbeaten with an 11-5 win.
Overland made 16 saves for the Scots, while Carthage goalie Emma Jeronimus had 14 saves.
Macalester heads to New London, Conn., for four CWPA conference matches on Mar. 10-11, beginning with a game against Carthage on Mar. 10 at 2:00 p.m.
