ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team lost a MIAC contest to Hamline University on the road, 118-96 Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena. The Scots drop to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in league play with the loss, while the Pipers improve to 6-6, 2-5 MIAC.
Three-pointers by junior forward
Tyler Seaberg (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor School) and sophomore guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) helped Macalester stay close for the first eight minutes of the first half. With Hamline leading 25-20 with 13 minutes on the clock, the Pipers went on an 11-2 run for a 36-22 advantage. The Scots came as close as 49-39 following threes from Smith and sophomore guard
Nathan Davies (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin). But Hamline closed out the half with 14-8 run to take a 63-47 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Pipers pushed their lead to 81-59 before the Scots received three-pointers from first year guard
Tommy Clark (Burbank, Calif./Burbank) and junior forward
Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) to spark a 10-2 run and make the score 83-69 with 10:39 to play. Again Hamline answered, scoring the next 12 points to put the game out of reach. The Pipers shot 55.4 percent from the field for the game compared to 43.0 percent for Macalester. The Scots grabbed 18 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second-chance points.
Four Scots scored in double-figures, led by first year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. He also led Macalester in rebounding with nine and blocks with two. Ferm and Davies each had 13 points, with Ferm delivering six assists. Sophomore forward
Rob Newman (Westchester, N.Y./Rye Country Day) added 10 points and four rebounds. Zach Smith made all 11 of his shots from the field and was 8-of-8 from the line en route to 34 points for Hamline.
Macalester hosts Gustavus Adolphus on Monday, Jan. 8 in another MIAC game. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
