ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team dropped a MIAC game to the University of St. Thomas on the road, 122-74 Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena. With the loss, the Scots fall to 2-17 overall and 1-13 in the conference, while the Tommies improve to 12-8, 10-5 MIAC.
Three-pointers by senior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) and sophomore forward
Rob Newman (Westchester, N.Y./Rye Country Day) helped Macalester take an early 12-11 edge in the first 6:15 of the game. St. Thomas answered with 10 straight points to take a 21-12 lead midway through the half. Five threes over the next four minutes helped the Tommies push their lead to 39-22 with 5:09 on the clock. The Scots came within 45-30 before St. Thomas closed out the half with a 9-2 run, capped by the Tommies' 10th three-pointer of the half, to take a 54-32 lead at the break.
St. Thomas maintained the upper hand into the second half, extending the lead to 73-43 with 13:34 remaining en route to the Tommies' second win over the Scots this season. St. Thomas hit 10 more threes after halftime and held a 51-39 rebounding edge for the game.
First year forward
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Macalester. Olson finished with 13 points, while first year guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) registered 10 points and five rebounds. Jack Sowada paced St. Thomas with 22 points.
Macalester continues MIAC play on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Carleton. The league match-up begins at 1:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
